Economic crises forces more than half of hotels on Majorca to close for Easter
The current economic crisis has forced more than half of the hotels on Majorca to remain closed for the Easter holidays as the number of bookings drops to record lows.
Information released by the Federacion Empresarial Hotelera de Mallorca (FEHM) anticipates that only 40% of the hotels in Majorca will be open for the Easter holidays, compared to 80% last year.
Easter normally marks the beginning of the summer season for most of Majorca’s resorts and hotels, yet this year more and more hotels are delaying opening their doors because the demand simply isn’t there yet.
Many of the closed hotels that would normally open next week are now expected to open in late May, with employers at numerous establishments forced to take involuntary unpaid leave until these hotels open.
However, it is not all doom and gloom. The 40% of hotels that are open are reporting good business, as the reduced choice leads to higher occupancy rates for those hotels that have opened in anticipation of a bumper Easter.
